Victorian Government delivers unprecedented investment in Australia's leading basketball state

New facilities investment by the Andrews Government and booming participation growth are reinforcing Victoria’s status as Australia’s basketball epicentre.

SMC Strategies has worked closely with Basketball Victoria and Basketball Australia in 2018 to achieve record investment in facilities that will see the State continue to lead the nation for decades to come.

340,000 Victorians play the game, eclipsing participation rates in every other State and accounting for over one-third of all participants in Australia.

The enormous value of basketball to the community has been recognised with over $100 million of new investment in facilities throughout Victoria.

This includes the $82 million expansion of the Knox Regional Sports Park, which will create 10 new community courts for local basketball competitions in Melbourne’s growing south-east. It will also house The Australian Basketball Centre of Excellence and become the home for a new NBL team in Melbourne.

Seven new high-performance hubs will be created in regional centres across the state, with plans already in train for Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Werribee and Traralgon. The hubs will enable young players to train at the highest level in their local area and deliver a clear pathway to playing top level basketball.

A long awaited refurbishment of Hi-Sense Arena, to be known as Melbourne Arena, will also be undertaken at a cost of $13 million.
