Tasmania's recent 2026/27 State budget has confirmed a commitment of $8 million to a major redevelopment of the Domain Tennis Centre in Hobart,

The investment enables the project at the State's tennis headquarters to proceed, matching the Federal Government's commitment in November 2025.

The upgrade will help secure major international events like the Hobart International and the Billie Jean King Cup, bringing world class tennis to Tasmania.

Importantly, it will also deliver high value to the regional community with better court surfaces, improved accessibility and amenity, alongside new facilities for fast growing sports like padel and pickleball.

Impact studies show that the project will create local jobs, help to attract more than 100,000 visitors a year, and inject millions into the Tasmanian economy.

In January 2026, the Tasmanian Government also provided $1.5 million in funding over five years to support the delivery of the Hobart International through to 2027.

Minister for Tourism,. Hospitality and Events Jane Howlett said the Tasmanian Government has been a long-time supporter of Tasmainia's flagship tennis event.

“The Hobart International is a huge drawcard showcasing elite women’s tennis talent and is just one example of Tasmanians flocking to support major sporting events in their state.

“These events provide Tasmanians with the opportunity to access live, elite sporting experiences – events that inspire young athletes and promote health and wellbeing across the community.

“We are delivering for Tasmanians by supporting events that play a vital role in positioning Tasmania as a premier destination for major sporting events, and which drive interstate and international visitation.” Minister Howlett said.

The Hobart International is the only all-women’s tennis tournament in Australia leading into the Australian Open.

SMC has been working with Tennis Australia and Tennis Tasmania over several years to achieve project progression and delivery.
